Behaviour during evacuations
How do I behave if the building is evacuated?

First of all, it is important you keep calm!
Leave the room you are in quickly but without haste. If you do not notice open fire or heavy smoke in the immediate vicinity of your room, you always have enough time to put on a jacket and lock the room after leaving it. Subsequently, leave the building via the nearest escape route. Please do not use the lift; take the stairs instead. Advice: Familiarise yourself with the premises of HSBI and pay attention to escape route signs and assembly points when entering and during your stay at the building.

What do I have to consider if people with disabilities have to be evacuated?

During an evacuation, please approach people with disabilities and ask whether they need assistance and what kind of assistance they need. If necessary, ask other people to help with the assistance.

For students who use a wheelchair or who need assistance during evacuation due to impaired mobility, rescue sheets are available for free at the different university locations. In the university’s main building, they are available from the information desk, in Lampingstrasse and on Minden Campus, they are available from the facility managers/technicians and the security staff. In Gütersloh, please contact the office managers in the Gleis 13 building. Biotechnology and Instrumentation Engineering students will also receive the rescue sheets from the information desk in the university’s main building. Advice: Talk to your fellow students in advance whether they can or will provide assistance. As a helping person, offer assistance proactively.

For employees, a rescue seat and staff trained in using it are available.

We kindly ask you to assist people with other disabilities and to guide them out of the building.

If evacuation is not possible, take the person who has to be evacuated to an office or a staircase and approach a fire protection/evacuation assistant telling them where the person who has to be evacuated is at the moment. They will then pass on the information to the fire brigade for them to carry out the rescue.

Where are the assembly points and how do I recognise them?
  • There are four assembly points at the main building of HSBI. They are located to the right and the left of the main entrance, at the conference centre and at the rear of the building (please pay attention to the escape and rescue route maps, the nearest assembly points are marked on them).

  • On Minden Campus, the assembly points are in the car park in front of Building F, in the car park in front of Building B and in the car park in front of Building H (Ringstrasse 94).
  • In Gütersloh, Schulstrasse, the assembly point is in the front parking area.
  • In Gütersloh, Gleis 13, the assembly point is to the right of the building next to the Employment Agency.

How do I know that the building has to be evacuated?
  • In the main building of HSBI, an announcement and an acoustic signal will notify you that you must leave the building.
  • In Lampingstrasse, there will be an acoustic alarm. In addition, there will be an optical alarm in the wood workshop.
  • On Minden Campus, an acoustic signal will announce that you have to leave the new building. In the other buildings, a house alarm will alert you to leave the building. In addition, the evacuation and fire protection assistants use air horns to announce the evacuation.
  • In Building G (Biotechnology and Instrumentation Engineering) and at the locations in Gütersloh (Schulstrasse and Gleis 13), an acoustic signal will alert you to leave the building.
  • In Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse, there will be an acoustic signal indicating that you must leave the building. The fire brigade must be alerted additionally.
How do I open an emergency exit?
  • To open an emergency exit door in HSBI’s main building, please press the red button (including the plastic cover) of the escape door control next to the respective door with force. A local alarm will sound and you will be able to open the door. Please note that the emergency exits may only be opened in an emergency. Which tasks do the people have who can be seen in the building wearing orange vests during an evacuation?

Trained fire protection and evacuation assistants will be in action at all HSBI locations in case of an evacuation to help clear the respective building. Their tasks include searching a designated area to find out whether everyone has left all the rooms, halls etc. Locked rooms will not be checked again and are counted as cleared. Subsequently, the fire protection and evacuation assistants notify the person responsible for all notifications that the area checked by them has been cleared. These notifications are then forwarded to the fire brigade and emergency personnel. They are an important indication for further action. If there are any areas that have not been declared cleared, persons will be rescued from there first before other action is taken.

When may I return to the building after an evacuation?

Buildings may only be re-entered at all HSBI locations after an all-clear has been given. This will be done by the fire brigade or by authorised HSBI personnel after consultation with the fire brigade.
