This session explores how artistic methods are used by students to problematize migration and integration dynamics within a social science context.  The focus is on Make Something! – the final assignment in an international summer school course at University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Students are tasked with exploring migration/integration course themes through artistic methods of their choosing.  Using mosaics, murals, puppet theater, blackout poetry, painting, photography, collage, sculpture, musical performance, comics, drawing, origami, weaving, serious games -- and more – students illuminate important features of relevant research literature, while also centering creativity and personal reflection.

Gregg Bucken-Knapp is professor of public administration at University of Gothenburg, Sweden. His research focuses on immigration and integration in a policy and administrative context, with a particular emphasis on the lived experiences of migrants. His most recent work focuses on the use of arts-based methods to shed light on the everyday effects of forced migration. Since 2018, he has been the lead organizer of the annual Swedish Institute Academy for Young Professionals migration and integration training module.

Target group: Studierende Master Sozialwissenschaftliche Nachhaltigkeits- und Transformationsstudien/ Students Master of Social Science Sustainability and Transformation Studies
